What are the 16 career clusters?

Career clusters are a way of sorting every job in the US economy into 16 broad groups of related work. The National Career Clusters Framework was built so that schools, colleges, and workforce programs could organize what they teach around where the jobs actually are, instead of around academic departments. If you have sat through a career day, filled in an interest inventory, or picked a program of study in high school, you have almost certainly met it.

The framework is the backbone of career and technical education in the US. Each cluster contains several career pathways, and each pathway contains dozens or hundreds of specific occupations, so a student can start with something as vague as "I like helping people" and work down to a licensed job title with a known salary and training route. That is the real value of it: clusters connect an interest to a course sequence, and a course sequence to work.

One thing worth knowing before you go further. Advance CTE, the organization that stewards the framework, published a modernized version in 2024, and states are moving to it at their own pace. The 16 cluster model below is the one most schools, counselors, and state systems still use day to day, and the occupations inside each group are the same either way.

The 16 career clusters, one by one

Each cluster below lists three real occupations with their median annual pay from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They are representative, not a full list: most clusters contain well over a hundred distinct jobs.

Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources

Work that produces food, manages land, and looks after animals and natural systems. It runs from production agriculture and food processing through to environmental testing, animal care, and conservation. Programs of study in this cluster usually pair science coursework with hands-on lab or field placements, and a lot of the jobs are outdoors.

Architecture and Construction

Designing, building, and maintaining the built environment: homes, offices, roads, bridges, and the systems running through them. The cluster covers design and pre-construction planning, the skilled trades that do the building, and the inspection work that keeps structures safe. Many of the best paid roles here start with an apprenticeship rather than a degree.

Arts, A/V Technology, and Communications

Careers built around making and delivering content: design, film and audio production, performing arts, journalism, and public relations. Technical craft matters as much as creativity, because most of these jobs involve production tools, clients, and deadlines rather than pure self-expression. A portfolio of finished work tends to open more doors than a transcript.

Business Management and Administration

The work of running an organization: planning, operations, human resources, and the administrative systems everything else depends on. Every industry needs it, which makes this the most portable cluster in the framework and a common landing spot for people who change fields. Entry roles are usually coordination or administrative jobs that lead into management within a few years.

Education and Training

Teaching, advising, and designing how people learn, both in schools and inside companies. Alongside classroom teaching it covers school counseling, curriculum and instructional design, library and media services, and school administration. Public school roles require state licensure, which is worth planning for early; corporate training generally does not.

Finance

Managing money for people, companies, and institutions through banking, accounting, investment, insurance, and financial planning. The work is analytical and heavily regulated, so progression is tied to licenses and certifications as much as to experience. Comfort with detail and a tolerance for rules matter more here than a specific college major.

Government and Public Administration

Public service careers: policy and planning, regulation and inspection, revenue and taxation, national security, and the administration of government programs at city, state, and federal level. Hiring is structured and slower than the private sector, often with civil service testing, and the roles are correspondingly stable. It is the cluster where the work is judged by whether a system serves the public well.

Health Science

Diagnosing, treating, and supporting patients, plus the laboratory, records, and research work behind clinical care. This is the largest cluster by employment in most states, and it spans certificate-level support roles right up to licensed clinicians with doctoral degrees. Clinical placements and licensure exams are the gateway for almost every role in it.

Hospitality and Tourism

Food service, lodging, travel, events, and attractions: work organized entirely around other people having a good experience. Hours are irregular and the pace is high, but responsibility arrives early and management is reachable without a degree more often than in any other cluster. Culinary and hospitality programs feed straight into it.

Human Services

Careers focused on personal and family wellbeing: counseling, social work, childcare, community support, and personal care services. Much of the work is funded publicly or by nonprofits, so pay tends to be modest relative to the training required, and the licensure route matters a great deal. It is where a lot of students land who want the helping side of health without the clinical side.

Information Technology

Building and running software, networks, data systems, and the security around them. Certifications and a visible body of work carry genuine weight here, so the entry routes are more varied than in most clusters and self-teaching is normal. Support and helpdesk jobs remain the most common on-ramp into everything else.

Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security

Legal services, policing, firefighting, emergency management, corrections, and private security. Some roles need a professional degree and a bar exam, others an academy program and a fitness standard, so the training paths inside this one cluster look nothing alike. Background checks and testing are part of almost every hiring process in it.

Manufacturing

Making things at scale, plus the maintenance, quality control, and process work that keeps a plant running. Modern manufacturing is heavily automated, so the demand has shifted toward technicians who can set up, program, and repair equipment rather than manual assemblers. Community college programs and paid apprenticeships dominate the entry routes.

Marketing

Understanding customers and getting a product in front of them through research, advertising, brand management, and sales. Results here are measurable, which makes it one of the few clusters where a track record can outrun a credential quickly. Sales roles are the usual entry point, and they teach the rest of the cluster faster than a classroom does.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

Research and engineering: designing systems, testing ideas, and applying mathematics to physical and biological problems. Engineering roles generally require a bachelor degree and often professional licensure, while research careers usually go further than that. Technician roles offer a much shorter route into the same labs and projects, and are frequently overlooked.

Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics

Moving people and goods, and planning the networks that make it possible: trucking, aviation, rail, warehousing, and supply chain management. Operating roles run on licenses and endorsements rather than degrees, while the planning and management side is analytical and increasingly data heavy. No cluster has been reshaped more visibly by online shopping.

Two habits make this go faster. First, read your second and third clusters properly, since most people sit across two or three and the overlap is where the interesting jobs live. Second, look at the entry level and the senior end of each cluster, not just the middle: a cluster you would reject on its typical pay often contains a role that pays double.

How teachers and counselors use career clusters

In schools the framework does three jobs. It organizes programs of study so a course sequence leads somewhere concrete, it gives advisers shared language for a conversation that otherwise drifts, and it structures work-based learning by connecting local employers to the cluster their roles belong to.

The common failure is treating a cluster result as a decision. Used well, it narrows the field to something a student can research in an afternoon, and the pay and outlook figures attached to each occupation do the rest. What career cluster pays the most?

Health Science, Information Technology, and Finance carry the highest typical pay, but the spread inside a cluster is wider than the gap between clusters. Health Science alone runs from medical assistant at $45,690 to physical therapist at $102,760, and Information Technology from user support specialist at $61,860 to software developer at $135,980. Choosing a cluster on pay alone tells you very little; the level you train to inside it tells you almost everything. Every figure here is the BLS median annual wage for that occupation.

How many career clusters are there?

If your school or state system uses the updated version, the cluster names will differ, but the occupations underneath them have not moved.

What is the difference between a career cluster and a career pathway?

A cluster is the broad grouping; a pathway is a defined route inside it. Health Science, for example, contains pathways for therapeutic services, diagnostics, health informatics, and biotechnology research, and a nursing sequence sits in only one of them. Schools use the cluster to organize their programs of study and the pathway to sequence the actual courses.

Do career clusters matter after high school?

They matter as a map rather than a commitment. Community colleges and workforce boards organize programs by cluster, so knowing yours makes financial aid, apprenticeship, and transfer options far easier to search. Adults changing careers use them the same way: the cluster names the territory, and the occupation data underneath tells you what the move would actually pay.
