Careers for Social Anxiety: Low-Exposure Work Environments (2026)
This is a ranking of work environments, not of people. The occupation whose published conditions score highest on the measures below is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +15.8% projected employment change over 2024–2034. Below are 30 occupations with the exact O*NET and BLS figures behind each one.

How this list was built
- Every occupation in the bank carries O*NET Work Context ratings on a 1–5 scale. Four of them describe how much of the job involves being exposed to, or judged by, people outside your own team: "Deal With External Customers or the Public in General", "Conflict Situations", "Consequence of Error", and "Time Pressure".
- The score is a weighted blend of those four, each rescaled to 0–100: less dealing with the public counts for 35%, fewer conflict situations for 25%, a lower consequence of error for 15%, and less time pressure for 10%. The last 15% goes to occupations the bank flags remote-friendly, which is itself derived from O*NET ratings — time spent sitting, e-mail use, working with computers, low outdoor exposure, low physical proximity — rather than from any employer’s claim about a job advert.
- Contact with colleagues is deliberately not scored down, and that is what separates this list from our careers for introverts. Social anxiety centres on the fear of being evaluated, usually by people you do not know well, rather than on preferring fewer people around. Several occupations here involve a full day of talking to the same small team. O*NET does publish a "Public Speaking" rating, which would be the single most relevant signal here, but the bank does not persist it per occupation, so a page-level ranking cannot reach it. The introvert list, which is built in the data pipeline rather than at page level, does use it.
- Two filters run before any scoring. The list is limited to the 260 occupations that carry a full BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile and at least 50,000 US workers, so every row is a job that exists in volume and has a full profile page here. Each one must also report a BLS median at or above $50,980, the median for all US occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025). That second rule is an editorial choice, not a data one: a work-environment score on its own fills the top of any list with the lowest-paid work in the economy, which is not an honest answer to anyone asking what to do next.
Work Context describes a job, not a person. A low score on public dealing does not mean a role has no difficult conversations, and a high one does not make a job impossible. Anxiety also responds to treatment, practice and a supportive team in ways no occupational dataset can represent. Read the full methodology.

Careers and social anxiety: FAQ
What kinds of jobs involve the least public exposure?
On the O*NET Work Context measures this page uses, the lowest-exposure environments involve little dealing with external customers or the general public, little conflict, a forgiving consequence of error and less time pressure, and are often doable remotely. The highest-scoring occupation in the bank on that definition is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +15.8% projected employment change over 2024–2034.
Should I pick a career to avoid social anxiety?
That is a question for you and, if you have one, your clinician — not for a dataset. Nothing on this page is medical, diagnostic or clinical advice, and none of it should displace a clinician, an employment specialist or a disability employment service. Structuring a working life entirely around avoidance tends to shrink it over time, and anxiety often responds to treatment. What this page can honestly offer is an accurate description of which occupations involve less contact with strangers, so that a decision you make is at least an informed one.
How is this different from your careers for introverts list?
The introvert list scores down contact with other people generally. This one does not: it targets exposure to people outside your team and to situations where a mistake is visible, and it deliberately leaves team contact alone. The result is a list with more collaborative desk work on it. This ranking covers 30 of the 923 occupations in the bank.
Do any of these jobs involve no people at all?
No. Every occupation in the bank involves colleagues, and the ratings here are averages across everyone doing the job in the US, not guarantees about a particular employer. The realistic difference between the top and the bottom of this list is how much of the day is spent with people you do not already know.
How was this list built?

What do these careers pay?
The middle career on this list pays $104,205 a year, against $50,980 for all US occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025). The range runs from $55,570 to $175,140.
