Getting in

How to become a Data Center Construction Manager

Most hold a bachelor's degree in construction management, electrical or mechanical engineering, and gain experience on hospitals, industrial plants or other mission critical facilities before moving into data centers. Electrical and mechanical systems knowledge is especially valued.

The Uptime Institute offers accreditations on data center design and operations tiers, and the Construction Management Association of America and PMI offer construction and project management credentials. Employers range from hyperscale cloud companies to large general contractors with mission critical divisions. Comfort with fast schedules and intense supply chain coordination is essential.

The work

What does a Data Center Construction Manager do?

Data centers are some of the most complex buildings being built today, packed with high-voltage electrical gear, backup generators, cooling plants and redundant systems that cannot fail. Data center construction managers lead these projects for cloud providers, colocation companies, and the contractors who build for them.

They manage budgets, schedules and contractors across many trades, track long-lead equipment such as switchgear, transformers and chillers, and coordinate with utilities on power delivery. They oversee commissioning, where every system is tested under load before servers arrive, and hand finished halls over to operations teams. Many manage multiple buildings on a campus at once, often on very aggressive timelines.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Manage budgets and schedules for data center buildings
  2. Coordinate electrical, mechanical and structural contractors
  3. Track procurement of switchgear, generators and cooling equipment
  4. Coordinate utility power delivery and substations
  5. Oversee integrated systems testing and commissioning
  6. Enforce safety on sites with high-voltage work
  7. Hand completed data halls over to operations teams

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Data center construction managers work on large campuses, often in rural or suburban areas near cheap power, from site trailers and offices. Travel between sites is common, and the pace is fast with many parallel buildings. Work includes time on active jobsites with heavy electrical and mechanical equipment.
