Getting in

How to become a Legal Operations Manager

There is no single path. Legal ops professionals come from law practice, paralegal and law firm management roles, finance, consulting, project management and IT. A bachelor's degree is typical, and some have a JD or MBA.

CLOC, the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium, is the main professional community and publishes a core competency framework for the field. The Association of Corporate Counsel also runs a legal operations section. Many people move into the role by taking on technology or budget projects inside a legal department.

The work

What does a Legal Operations Manager do?

Legal operations managers make in-house legal departments run like well-managed business units. They manage the legal budget and spending on outside law firms, negotiate rates and alternative fee arrangements, and track performance.

They also choose and run legal technology, including matter management, e-billing, contract lifecycle management and document management systems, and increasingly AI tools. They design intake and workflow processes so lawyers spend time on legal work, build dashboards and metrics for the general counsel, and lead projects such as consolidating vendors or automating routine contracts. The role usually reports to the general counsel or chief of staff of the legal department.

Day-to-day tasks

  3. Select and implement legal technology systems
  4. Design intake, contracting and approval workflows
  5. Build dashboards and metrics for legal leadership
  6. Manage vendor relationships for legal services
