Getting in

How to become a Chief Information Security Officer

Most CISOs have a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related field, and many hold a master's degree. They usually rise through security engineering, security operations, risk and compliance, or IT leadership roles over many years.

Certifications such as CISSP from ISC2 and CISM from ISACA are widely expected. Employers look for experience leading incident response, building security teams and presenting risk to executives and boards. Many CISOs first serve as deputy CISO or head of security operations at a large company.

The work

What does a Chief Information Security Officer do?

The chief information security officer leads an organization's cybersecurity program. They decide which threats matter most, set security policy and architecture, run security operations and incident response, and make sure the company meets regulatory and customer requirements for protecting data.

CISOs translate technical risk into business terms for the CEO and board. Public companies must now describe how they manage cybersecurity risk in SEC filings and disclose material incidents, so CISOs brief directors regularly and work closely with legal, finance and technology leaders. When a breach happens, the CISO leads the technical response.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Set cybersecurity strategy, policy and risk priorities
  2. Lead security operations, engineering and incident response teams
  3. Brief the CEO and board on cyber risk and incidents
  4. Oversee compliance with security regulations and frameworks
  5. Direct response to breaches and coordinate with legal and regulators
  6. Manage the security budget and technology vendors
  7. Run security awareness and third-party risk programs

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

CISOs work in corporate offices, often with hybrid schedules, and are on call for serious incidents at any hour. The job combines strategy meetings, board briefings and vendor management with crisis response, and it carries significant personal accountability when incidents occur.
