Getting in

How to become an IT Auditor

A bachelor's degree in accounting, information systems, computer science or business is typical. Large accounting firms hire graduates directly into IT audit or technology risk practices and train them on the job.

ISACA's Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) is the defining credential; it requires passing an exam and documented work experience in the field. The Institute of Internal Auditors' Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is also valued, and some IT auditors are CPAs. Career changers from IT support or security often move in by taking the CISA exam and joining an internal audit team.

The work

What does an IT Auditor do?

IT auditors check whether an organization's technology can be trusted. They review who has access to financial systems, how software changes are approved, whether backups work, and how data is protected. For public companies, they test the IT general controls that support financial reporting under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. In banks and healthcare, they also test compliance with industry regulations.

Auditors plan each review, interview system owners, collect evidence such as access lists and change tickets, test samples, and write findings with recommendations. Internal IT auditors work for one organization and report to its audit committee; external IT auditors work at accounting firms and support financial statement audits or SOC reports for many clients.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Plan audits of IT systems and controls
  2. Test user access, change management and backup controls
  3. Review IT general controls for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance
  4. Interview system owners and collect evidence
  5. Evaluate security and data protection practices
  6. Write audit findings and recommendations
  7. Follow up on remediation of past findings

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

IT auditors work at public accounting firms, banks, insurers, healthcare systems, government audit offices and large corporations. The work is desk-based with many interviews and document reviews. External auditors may travel to clients and face long hours during year-end audit season. Internal audit roles tend to have steadier schedules and are often hybrid.
