Getting in

How to become a Customer Success Manager

Many CSMs start in customer support, account management, sales development, teaching, or consulting. A bachelor's degree is common but not always required, and employers value communication, problem-solving and comfort learning software.

There is no licensing requirement. Short courses and certifications from customer success platforms and communities can help newcomers learn the vocabulary of churn, health scores and renewals. Industry knowledge, such as healthcare or finance, makes candidates more competitive for specialized products. Senior paths lead to strategic accounts, customer success leadership, or account management.

The work

What does a Customer Success Manager do?

Customer success managers look after a company's existing customers, mostly at software and subscription businesses. Their job is to make sure each account actually uses the product and gets results, because customers who see value renew their contracts and buy more.

A CSM manages a portfolio of accounts. They run onboarding, hold regular business reviews, track product usage and health scores, and spot accounts at risk of cancelling. They act as the customer's advocate inside the company, passing feedback to product and support teams, and they work with account executives on renewals and upsells. Many CSMs carry targets for retention or expansion revenue.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Onboard new customers and guide them through product setup
  2. Run quarterly business reviews with customer stakeholders
  3. Monitor product usage and account health metrics
  4. Identify at-risk accounts and create retention plans
  5. Relay customer feedback to product and engineering teams
  6. Partner with sales on renewals and expansion opportunities
  7. Create training materials and best-practice guides for customers

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

CSMs work at technology companies, often remotely or in hybrid arrangements, spending much of the day on video calls with customers. Some travel to visit key accounts. Hours are mostly regular, with pressure around renewal dates and quarter-end.
