Getting in
How to become a VFX Compositor
Most compositors hold a degree or diploma in visual effects, animation or digital media, though a strong reel matters more than the credential. Many start as roto or paint artists, cleaning plates and drawing mattes frame by frame, and move up to compositing after learning Nuke and the studio pipeline.
The Visual Effects Society is the main professional body and hosts screenings, education and awards. Foundry offers Nuke learning resources and a free non-commercial license for practice. Large studios run junior and apprentice programs, and some VFX artists are now organizing under IATSE.

The work
What does a VFX Compositor do?
Compositors are the last step in the visual effects pipeline. They take live-action plates, CG renders, matte paintings, smoke and fire elements and layer them together so the finished shot looks like it was filmed in one take. Using node-based software such as Foundry Nuke, they pull keys from green and blue screens, remove wires and rigs, match grain, lens distortion and lighting, and integrate digital creatures or environments into real footage.
They review shots in dailies with VFX supervisors and adjust edges, color and depth until the effect disappears into the film. Senior compositors often take on lookdev for key sequences and help set up templates other artists follow across a show.
