Getting in

How to become a Psilocybin Facilitator

In Oregon, facilitators must complete a state-approved training program, pass the Oregon Health Authority's exam and obtain a license. Colorado's Natural Medicine Program requires training, experience and licensing through the state's Department of Regulatory Agencies. There is no degree requirement for the basic license, although many facilitators are already therapists, nurses, chaplains or social workers.

The field is small and many facilitators work part-time or run their own practice alongside another career. Experience in counseling, hospice, crisis support or meditation guidance is good preparation for holding space during intense experiences.

The work

What does a Psilocybin Facilitator do?

Psilocybin facilitators support adults who choose to take psilocybin in a state-regulated program. In Oregon and Colorado, licensed facilitators meet with clients before a session to discuss their goals, health history, expectations and safety, and to agree on boundaries such as consent for supportive touch. On the day, they stay with the client for the full experience, which can last many hours, offering calm, nonjudgmental support.

Afterward, facilitators hold optional integration sessions to help clients make sense of what they experienced. Facilitators do not diagnose or treat illness unless they hold a separate clinical license; their role is preparation, safety and support. They keep records required by the state and follow strict rules on ethics and confidentiality.
