What does an Infectious Disease Physician do?

Infectious disease physicians are called in when infections are severe, unusual or hard to treat. They manage bone and joint infections, infected heart valves and implants, drug-resistant bacteria, fungal infections in transplant and cancer patients, and fevers of unknown cause. In clinic they treat HIV, viral hepatitis and travel-related illness, and they prescribe medications that prevent HIV.

Many also run hospital antimicrobial stewardship programs that guide antibiotic use, and infection prevention programs that track outbreaks and hospital-acquired infections. Some work in public health, global health or vaccine research.
