Getting in
How to become an Endocrinologist
After medical school and a three-year internal medicine residency, endocrinologists complete a two-year ACGME-accredited endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism fellowship. Pediatric endocrinologists train through pediatrics.
The American Board of Internal Medicine certifies them in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. The Endocrine Society and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology are the main professional organizations. Residents interested in the field usually complete endocrinology electives, inpatient diabetes rotations and research during residency. Fellowship covers diabetes technology, thyroid ultrasound and biopsy, and the hormone testing used to diagnose rare gland disorders.
