Getting in

How to become a Crypto Compliance Officer

Most come from bank or fintech compliance, anti-money laundering investigation, law or regulatory agencies, and hold a bachelor's degree in finance, criminal justice, business or a related field; senior roles may require a law degree. Knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act, sanctions rules and blockchain basics is essential.

ACAMS offers the Certified Cryptoasset Anti-Financial Crime Specialist credential, and FinCEN guidance explains how money transmission rules apply to crypto businesses. Many enter as compliance analysts at exchanges and move up as the company's licenses and products grow.

The work

What does a Crypto Compliance Officer do?

Crypto compliance officers make sure digital asset businesses follow the law. They build and run anti-money laundering programs, including customer identity checks, transaction monitoring and suspicious activity reporting to FinCEN. They screen customers and blockchain addresses against sanctions lists, and they use blockchain analytics tools to see whether incoming funds come from hacks, darknet markets or other risky sources.

They also manage licensing, which can mean state money transmitter licenses and New York's BitLicense, and they respond to regulators' exams and questions. Compliance officers advise product teams on whether new features, such as staking or new tokens, create legal risk, and they train staff and report to senior management and the board.
