Getting in

How to become an Unit Still Photographer

Most unit photographers have a background in photojournalism, editorial or entertainment photography, and many studied photography in college. Experience shooting fast-moving events and people, plus an understanding of set etiquette, is key.

In the United States, unit still photographers are represented by the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600), which classifies them within the camera department. The Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP) is the professional honorary society for the craft. Many photographers start on independent films and television before landing studio features.

The work

What does an Unit Still Photographer do?

Unit still photographers capture the images studios use for posters, press kits, streaming thumbnails and social media. Working alongside the film crew, they photograph scenes during rehearsals and takes, using sound blimps or silent mirrorless cameras so the shutter is not picked up by microphones, and they position themselves without disturbing the camera or actors.

They also shoot behind-the-scenes images of the director and crew, and sometimes set up special portrait or key art shoots with cast. Photos are edited daily and delivered to the studio's publicity department, where approval processes give actors a say in which images are released.
