Getting in

How to become a Structured Finance Banker

Most structured finance bankers start in a bank analyst program after a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, mathematics or engineering. Comfort with large data sets and cash flow modeling is important, so people with quantitative backgrounds do well. Some come from rating agencies, mortgage lenders or accounting firms' securitization practices.

Investment bankers who advise on securities transactions must register with FINRA, which usually means passing the Securities Industry Essentials exam and the Series 79 Investment Banking Representative exam after a firm sponsors you. The Structured Finance Association publishes market standards and runs industry education for this field.

The work

What does a Structured Finance Banker do?

Structured finance bankers raise money for lenders and companies by packaging assets such as auto loans, credit card receivables, mortgages, equipment leases or corporate loans into securities. They analyze how the underlying loans have performed, model how cash will flow through different slices of the deal under stress, and design structures that rating agencies and investors will accept.

They work with issuers, rating agencies, lawyers and the bank's syndicate desk to bring each deal to market. Many structured finance bankers also arrange warehouse lines that fund loans before securitization, or fund finance facilities lent against the commitments of private fund investors.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Analyze historical performance data for loan and receivable pools
  2. Model cash flows across securitization tranches under stress cases
  3. Structure deals to meet rating agency criteria
  4. Coordinate legal documents and disclosure with issuers' counsel
  5. Arrange warehouse and fund finance credit facilities
  6. Market asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities with the syndicate desk
  7. Monitor outstanding deals for performance triggers

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.
