Getting in

How to become an Impact Investment Analyst

A bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business or a related field is typical, and many analysts have prior experience in banking, consulting, nonprofit finance or international development. A master's in business or public policy is common for advancement.

The Global Impact Investing Network sets widely used measurement standards and publishes research, and the CFA Institute's credentials, including its sustainable investing certificate, are valued. Community development finance roles are supported by the Opportunity Finance Network and the federal CDFI Fund. Many people enter as analysts at mission-driven lenders or foundations, or move over from mainstream finance after a few years.

The work

What does an Impact Investment Analyst do?

Impact investment analysts look at deals the way any investment analyst would, studying business models, financial statements and risks, but with a second question attached: what measurable good does this investment do? They work at impact venture and private equity funds, foundations making program-related investments, community development financial institutions and family offices.

Analysts screen companies and projects, run financial models, and set impact goals, such as affordable housing units created, people gaining access to clean energy or small business loans in underserved areas. They choose metrics, often drawing on the IRIS+ system from the Global Impact Investing Network, collect data from portfolio companies, and write impact reports for investors. They also do diligence on whether a company's claims hold up.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Screen companies and projects against financial and impact criteria
  2. Build financial models and assess investment risk
  3. Define impact goals and metrics for each investment
  4. Conduct due diligence on financial and impact claims
  5. Collect and analyze impact data from portfolio companies
  6. Write investment memos for committees
  7. Prepare impact reports for investors and boards
  8. Track sector research and impact measurement standards

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Analysts work in office settings at funds, foundations and lenders, with hybrid schedules common. Some travel goes to portfolio companies and project sites, including internationally for development-focused funds. Hours rise around deal closings and reporting deadlines.
