Getting in
How to become a Global Macro Trader
Most macro traders hold a bachelor's degree in economics, finance, mathematics or a related field, and some have graduate degrees in economics. Many start as analysts on a bank's rates or foreign exchange desk, or as junior researchers at a macro hedge fund, and work up to running risk.
Traders at broker-dealers register with FINRA, usually by passing the Securities Industry Essentials exam and the Series 57 Securities Trader Representative exam with the firm's sponsorship. Traders in futures may need National Futures Association registration, and those trading swaps work under ISDA documentation. The CFA charter is common but not required.

The work
What does a Global Macro Trader do?
Global macro traders bet on how big economic forces will move markets. They form views on inflation, growth, central bank decisions, elections and trade policy, then express those views through government bonds, interest rate swaps, currencies, stock index futures and commodities. A trader might position for a central bank to cut rates sooner than expected, or for one currency to weaken against another.
The work mixes research with fast execution. Macro traders read economic data releases, central bank statements and political news as they happen, talk with economists and policymakers' watchers, and adjust positions within risk limits. At banks they also make prices for clients, while at hedge funds they run their own book of capital.
Day-to-day tasks
- Form views on inflation, growth and central bank policy across countries
- Trade government bonds, rate swaps, currencies and index futures
- React to economic data releases and central bank decisions in real time
- Size positions and manage stop losses within risk limits
- Use options to shape the risk and payoff of trades
- Discuss views with economists, strategists and other traders
- Review profit and loss and refine trading theses
Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.
Working conditions and hours
Macro traders work on trading floors and in hedge fund offices, following markets across time zones, so early mornings and late nights around major data releases are normal. The work is screen intensive and high pressure. Positions can be large, and losses are visible daily.
