Getting in
How to become a Stained Glass Artisan
Most stained glass artisans learn by working in a studio as an apprentice, starting with glass cutting and leading and moving up to painting, design and restoration over several years. Art and craft courses at colleges and art centers help, and some artisans hold fine arts degrees.
The Stained Glass Association of America provides education, workshops and professional standards, and restoration work follows preservation guidance such as the National Park Service's Preservation Brief on stained and leaded glass. Building a portfolio of completed and restored windows is the main way artisans win commissions.

The work
What does a Stained Glass Artisan do?
Stained glass artisans create and restore windows made of colored glass pieces held together with lead came or copper foil. New commissions start with a design drawing and a full-size cartoon, then the artisan selects and cuts glass, paints details with vitreous enamels that are fired in a kiln, and assembles and solders the panel.
Much of the work in the US is restoration. Studios remove deteriorating windows from churches, courthouses and historic homes, document them, dismantle them, clean and repair or replace broken pieces, re-lead the panels and reinstall them with new frames or protective glazing. Artisans also make lamps, transoms and residential pieces.
