Getting in

How to become a Salesforce Administrator

No specific degree is required, and many admins come from sales operations, customer support, office administration or teaching. Salesforce's free Trailhead platform covers the skills, and the Salesforce Certified Administrator exam is the standard credential employers look for. Advanced Administrator and Platform App Builder certifications are common next steps.

A typical route is becoming the accidental admin, the person on a team who learns to manage the system, then moving into a dedicated role. Volunteering to administer Salesforce for a nonprofit, many of which receive discounted licenses, is another way to build experience.

The work

What does a Salesforce Administrator do?

Salesforce administrators run the system that sales, service and marketing teams use every day. They create and change objects, fields, page layouts and record types, build automations with Flow, set up user accounts and permissions, and create reports and dashboards for managers. When a sales leader wants a new approval step or a support team needs a new case queue, the admin makes it happen, usually through configuration rather than code.

Admins also keep the system healthy: cleaning duplicate data, managing integrations, testing new features from Salesforce's regular releases, and training users. In many companies the admin acts as a business analyst too, translating what teams ask for into what the platform can do.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Create and modify objects, fields and page layouts
  2. Build automations with Salesforce Flow
  3. Manage users, profiles and permission sets
  4. Build reports and dashboards for managers
  5. Clean and deduplicate customer data
  6. Test and roll out features from new releases
  7. Train users and write internal guides

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Salesforce administrators work at companies of every size, nonprofits, universities and consulting partners. The job is desk-based and often remote or hybrid. Hours are regular, with some evening or weekend work for major releases or data migrations. Admins spend much of their time talking with the business users they support.
