Getting in

How to become a Principal Software Engineer

Principal engineers almost always have long careers as software engineers, typically with a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or engineering, followed by years at the senior and staff levels. There is no exam or license. Promotion depends on a track record of organization-wide technical impact, such as designing systems many teams depend on or leading a multi-year platform change.

People usually get there by excelling as staff engineers, building credibility with leadership, and becoming the recognized expert in an area the company cares about, such as distributed storage, security or machine learning infrastructure. Large employers publish career ladders that describe the principal level, and some people are hired directly into the role after leading similar work elsewhere.

The work

What does a Principal Software Engineer do?

Principal software engineers are among the most senior technical people in a software company. Where a staff engineer typically guides a group of teams, a principal engineer sets technical strategy for a whole organization: which platforms to build, which to buy, how systems should evolve over several years, and where the biggest technical risks lie.

They spend much of their time on high-stakes reviews, such as approving the architecture for a new product, deciding how a company handles data at very large scale, or untangling a reliability problem that affects millions of users. They often represent engineering to executives and customers, write the documents that define long-term direction, and coach staff engineers. Hands-on coding still happens, usually on prototypes or the most delicate parts of a system.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Define multi-year technical strategy for an organization or product line
  2. Approve or redirect the architecture of major new systems
  3. Identify technical risks and propose investments to reduce them
  4. Represent engineering in discussions with executives and key customers
  5. Coach staff and senior engineers on design and technical leadership
  6. Build prototypes that prove out new platform directions
  7. Lead reviews after the most serious production incidents

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Principal engineers work at large technology companies, cloud providers, financial firms and fast-growing startups. The job is desk-based and often hybrid, with a calendar full of reviews, planning sessions and one-on-one mentoring. Travel is occasional, for customer visits, conferences or company offsites. Pressure peaks around major launches and serious incidents.
