Pay by state
Which states pay Software Developers the most?
State medians come from the same OEWS release as the national figures. The cost-of-living column divides each state median by that state's BEA Regional Price Parity, restating pay in national-average dollars so a high-cost state and a low-cost one can be compared directly.

Getting in
How to become a ML Inference Engineer
Inference engineers usually hold a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or computer engineering. They combine systems programming skills in C++, Rust or Python with knowledge of how neural networks work and how GPUs and other accelerators execute them.
Common paths start in backend or performance engineering, high-performance computing or machine learning engineering, then specialize by working on model serving. Contributing to open-source inference engines, publishing benchmarks or optimizing a model for a new chip are strong signals to employers. Familiarity with profiling tools and distributed systems helps in interviews.

The work
What does a ML Inference Engineer do?
ML inference engineers take a trained model and make it fast and affordable to use. Large language models are expensive to run, so small gains in speed or memory translate into large savings and better user experiences. Inference engineers build and tune the servers that batch incoming requests, manage memory for long conversations, and spread a model across several chips.
They apply techniques such as quantization, which stores model weights in fewer bits, speculative decoding, caching and custom kernels. They measure latency, throughput and cost under real traffic, and work with research teams so new models can be served on day one. Many contribute to open-source serving engines such as vLLM.
Day-to-day tasks
- Build and tune servers that run large models in production
- Apply quantization and other techniques to cut memory and cost
- Benchmark latency, throughput and cost across hardware options
- Implement batching, caching and scheduling for model requests
- Profile serving systems to find performance bottlenecks
- Prepare new models for launch on production infrastructure
- Contribute fixes and features to open-source serving engines
Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.
Working conditions and hours
Inference engineers work at AI labs, cloud providers, AI chip startups and companies that run large models in their products. The work is desk-based and often hybrid. Because serving systems run around the clock, on-call rotations are common, and launches of new models bring busy periods.
