Getting in
How to become a Front of House Engineer
There is no license. Many engineers complete a certificate or degree in audio production or live sound, and Berklee covers front of house and monitor work in its live sound courses. Knowledge of digital consoles from makers such as DiGiCo, Yamaha and Avid, along with system tuning tools, is expected.
Most people learn by doing: mixing at local bars, churches and festivals, working as a stagehand or audio tech for a sound company, and assisting more experienced engineers. Touring engineers usually get hired by recommendation after years of building trust with bands and production managers.

The work
What does a Front of House Engineer do?
Front of house engineers control what the crowd hears. From a mixing console set up in the audience area, they balance vocals and instruments, shape tone with equalization and dynamics, add effects, and react to the band in real time so every song sounds right in that room.
Before doors open they help set up and tune the PA system, run line checks and soundcheck with the band, and save scenes for each song. Touring FOH engineers travel with one artist and adapt their mix to a different venue every night, while house engineers work for one club, theater or arena and mix whoever is booked.
Day-to-day tasks
- Mix vocals and instruments for the audience during performances
- Help rig and tune the PA system for each venue
- Run line checks and soundchecks with performers
- Program console scenes, effects and snapshots for each song
- Measure and correct room acoustics with analysis software
- Coordinate with monitor engineers and production managers
- Troubleshoot audio problems quickly during shows
Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.
Working conditions and hours
