Pay by state
Which states pay Software Developers the most?
State medians come from the same OEWS release as the national figures. The cost-of-living column divides each state median by that state's BEA Regional Price Parity, restating pay in national-average dollars so a high-cost state and a low-cost one can be compared directly.

Getting in
How to become a Computer Vision Engineer
A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related field is the usual minimum, and many computer vision engineers hold a master's or PhD with coursework in image processing and machine learning. Strong C++ and Python, linear algebra and familiarity with libraries such as OpenCV and PyTorch are expected.
The research community gathers around the Computer Vision Foundation's conferences, including CVPR and ICCV, and following that work is part of the job. Graduate research projects, robotics clubs, and public projects that run a vision model on real hardware are common ways to get a first role.

The work
What does a Computer Vision Engineer do?
Computer vision engineers write software that understands pictures. Their systems detect pedestrians for driver-assistance features, spot defects on a production line, read handwriting, measure tumors in scans, or track a player's movement in a sports broadcast. Most modern work uses deep learning models trained on large labeled image sets, combined with classic techniques from geometry and signal processing.
Day to day, they gather and label image data, train and evaluate models, and then make those models run fast enough on the target hardware, which might be a cloud server, a phone or a small chip inside a camera. In robotics and autonomous vehicles the role is often called perception engineering, and it involves fusing camera data with lidar and radar.
Day-to-day tasks
- Collect and label image and video datasets
- Train object detection, segmentation and tracking models
- Optimize models to run on embedded or mobile hardware
- Calibrate cameras and fuse camera data with other sensors
- Evaluate models on edge cases such as poor lighting
- Write production code in C++ or Python
- Review new research and prototype promising methods
Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.
Working conditions and hours
Computer vision engineers work at autonomous vehicle and robotics companies, medical device makers, defense contractors, manufacturers and consumer technology firms. Most work is at a desk, though roles tied to hardware include lab time, test-track visits or factory trips to collect data and validate systems. Hybrid schedules are common; fully remote roles are less common when hardware is involved.
