Getting in

How to become a Cloud Architect

Cloud architects typically have a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or engineering and many years of experience as systems administrators, network engineers, developers or cloud engineers. It is rarely an entry-level job.

Vendor certifications carry real weight here. AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional, Microsoft's Azure Solutions Architect Expert and Google's Professional Cloud Architect exams test design judgment across scenarios. Many architects hold more than one. A common path is cloud engineer to senior engineer to architect, often with a stint at a consultancy or cloud provider that exposes you to many customer environments.

The work

What does a Cloud Architect do?

Cloud architects design the blueprint for running an organization's systems in the cloud. They decide which services to use, how networks and accounts are laid out, how data is stored and backed up, and how applications will scale and recover from failures. Much of their work happens before anything is built: comparing options, estimating costs and documenting decisions.

They also lead migrations from company data centers to the cloud, set standards that engineering teams follow, and review designs to catch security and cost problems early. Cloud architects work closely with security teams on identity and encryption, and with finance on spending. Frameworks such as the AWS Well-Architected Framework give them a structured way to evaluate designs.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Design cloud architectures for new and migrated applications
  2. Choose cloud services based on cost, performance and risk
  3. Plan network, identity and account structures
  4. Lead migrations from on-premises data centers
  5. Review engineering designs against architecture standards
  6. Estimate and optimize cloud spending
  7. Design backup and disaster recovery strategies
  8. Document architecture decisions and diagrams

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Cloud architects work at enterprises, consultancies, cloud providers, government agencies and software companies. The work is desk-based, with many design reviews and stakeholder meetings. Remote and hybrid roles are common, though consulting architects may travel to client sites. Major migrations can involve weekend cutover windows.
