Getting in

How to become an Autonomous Vehicle Software Engineer

Most engineers hold a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or robotics, and research-heavy perception and planning roles often prefer a master's or PhD. Strong C++ and Python skills, plus knowledge of machine learning, computer vision, state estimation or optimization, are expected.

Useful preparation includes robotics competitions, autonomous racing teams and open-source tools such as ROS. Engineers should know the SAE J3016 levels of driving automation and the safety standards used in the field, including ISO 26262 and NHTSA's guidance on automated vehicles.

The work

What does an Autonomous Vehicle Software Engineer do?

Autonomous vehicle software engineers build the brain of a self-driving system. Perception engineers write software that turns camera, lidar and radar data into a map of nearby cars, pedestrians and lanes, often with machine learning models. Prediction and planning engineers decide what other road users are likely to do and choose a safe, comfortable path. Controls engineers turn that plan into steering, braking and acceleration.

Much of the work involves simulation and testing: replaying logged drives, building scenarios, measuring performance and fixing failures before code reaches a vehicle. Engineers work at robotaxi and autonomous trucking companies, automakers developing driver assistance features, suppliers and robotics firms.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Develop perception software that detects vehicles, pedestrians and lanes
  2. Train and evaluate machine learning models on driving data
  3. Write prediction and motion planning algorithms
  4. Build simulation scenarios to test driving behavior
  5. Analyze logged drives to find and fix failures
  6. Optimize code to run in real time on vehicle computers
  7. Document safety cases for software releases

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Engineers work in offices, with some remote or hybrid roles, mostly writing code and analyzing data. Some time is spent at test tracks or riding in test vehicles to evaluate behavior. Teams are concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Austin and Phoenix.
