Getting in

How to become an Acoustical Consultant

Most consultants hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or architecture, and many add a master's in acoustics from programs such as those at Penn State or Rensselaer. Berklee notes that musicians with technical training also move into the field.

The Acoustical Society of America is the main scientific society, and the Institute of Noise Control Engineering offers board certification that requires education, experience, references and a demanding exam. The National Council of Acoustical Consultants represents consulting firms whose principals must be ASA or INCE members. Some consultants also hold a professional engineering license.

The work

What does an Acoustical Consultant do?

Acoustical consultants shape the way spaces sound. For a concert hall, recording studio or theater, they model how sound reflects and decays, then recommend room shapes, finishes and adjustable panels. For offices, hospitals, schools and apartments, they design walls, floors and ceilings that keep noise from traveling between rooms.

Consultants also take field measurements, investigate complaints about mechanical systems or traffic noise, and prepare environmental noise studies for permits. Many firms design sound systems and AV infrastructure as well. The work combines physics, building design and listening, and consultants work closely with architects, mechanical engineers and owners.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Model room acoustics for concert halls, studios and theaters
  2. Design wall, floor and ceiling assemblies for sound isolation
  3. Measure noise and vibration with sound level meters and analyzers
  4. Investigate noise complaints from mechanical systems or traffic
  5. Prepare environmental noise studies for permits
  6. Review architectural drawings and specify acoustic materials
  7. Commission completed spaces with acoustic testing

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

Consultants spend most of their time in offices running models and writing reports, with site visits to construction projects, venues and industrial sites for measurements. Some travel is required. Schedules are mostly regular, with occasional night measurements when buildings are quiet.
