Pay by state
Which states pay Computer Programmers the most?
State medians come from the same OEWS release as the national figures. The cost-of-living column divides each state median by that state's BEA Regional Price Parity, restating pay in national-average dollars so a high-cost state and a low-cost one can be compared directly.

Getting in
How to become a XR Developer
Many XR developers have a bachelor's degree in computer science, game development or interactive media, though self-taught developers with strong portfolios are also hired. Core skills are Unity or Unreal, C# or C++, 3D math and an understanding of real-time graphics.
The Khronos Group's OpenXR specification and the developer programs run by headset makers provide documentation and sample projects. Publishing a small app to a headset store, or building a polished demo, is the most convincing evidence. Game developers and 3D web developers commonly move into XR work.

The work
What does a XR Developer do?
XR developers build experiences for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality devices, together called extended reality. Their apps might train surgeons on a virtual procedure, let factory workers see repair instructions over a real machine, help architects walk clients through an unbuilt building, or deliver a game on a VR headset. Most work in Unity or Unreal Engine, writing C# or C++, and use standards such as OpenXR to target multiple headsets.
XR has its own design problems. Developers must keep frame rates high to avoid motion sickness, design interactions for hands and controllers instead of mice, and anchor virtual objects convincingly in real rooms. They test constantly on physical headsets and phones.
Day-to-day tasks
- Build VR and AR applications in Unity or Unreal
- Design hand, controller and gaze interactions
- Optimize rendering to hold high frame rates
- Integrate OpenXR and platform SDKs
- Anchor virtual content to real-world surfaces
- Test comfort and usability on physical headsets
- Work with 3D artists and designers on assets
Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.
Working conditions and hours
XR developers work at game studios, enterprise training companies, healthcare and defense simulation firms, architecture visualization studios, agencies and hardware makers. The work is desk-based with frequent headset testing. Remote and hybrid roles are common, though some require lab access to specialized devices. Hours are mostly regular.
