Getting in

How to become a MWD Field Engineer

Some employers hire MWD engineers with an engineering or technical degree, while others accept a high school diploma plus electronics aptitude or military technical experience. Service companies run training courses on their tool systems, then pair new hires with experienced engineers on the rig.

Rig safety training is required before going to location. With experience, MWD engineers often move into directional drilling, coordinator roles in a remote operations center, or field service management. A valid driver's license and the ability to pass drug testing and background checks are standard. Experience with electronics repair or computers makes the training easier.

The work

What does a MWD Field Engineer do?

MWD field engineers run the electronics that tell a drilling crew where the bit is. Measurement-while-drilling tools sit just above the bit and send survey data, such as inclination and direction, to the surface through pressure pulses in the drilling mud or electromagnetic signals. The MWD engineer decodes those signals and delivers surveys to the directional driller.

They assemble and program the tools before they go in the hole, troubleshoot signal problems during drilling, and keep surface sensors working. Many jobs also include logging-while-drilling sensors, so the MWD hand handles gamma ray and other formation data as well.

Day-to-day tasks

  1. Program and assemble MWD tools before each run
  2. Decode mud pulse or electromagnetic survey signals
  3. Deliver directional surveys to the directional driller
  4. Troubleshoot surface sensors and downhole tools
  5. Record gamma ray and other logging-while-drilling data
  6. Maintain tool inventory and job records
  7. Follow rig safety and lifting procedures

Typical tasks, researched by NueCareer from the sources below.

Working conditions and hours

MWD field engineers live at the rig on rotations, often two to three weeks on location. They work long shifts, sometimes alone covering a full day, in a trailer near the rig floor. The work is remote and can be stressful when signals fail during drilling. Shared rig housing, long drives between locations and time away from family are part of the job, though remote operations centers offer some office-based roles.
