# Careers for Stay-at-Home Parents Returning to Work (2026)

Every career on this list can be done from home, is not projected to shrink, and pays at or above the US median. The highest-scoring one is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +15.8% projected employment change over 2024–2034. Below are 30 occupations with the exact O\*NET and BLS figures behind each one.

**Read this first.** Written for stay-at-home parents of any gender. Most of the searches that lead to a page like this say "moms", and most of the people making this decision are mothers, but nothing in the underlying data is gendered and neither is this page. It also assumes nothing about why you took time out or whether you want full-time work.

## How this list was built

- Every occupation here is flagged remote-friendly by the bank. That flag is derived from O\*NET ratings rather than from job adverts: the work has to score high on time spent sitting, e-mail use and working with computers, and low on outdoor exposure, hands-on object handling, physical proximity to other people and exposure to disease. It is a measure of whether the tasks can be done away from a fixed site, not a promise that a given employer offers remote work.
- Occupations BLS projects to shrink over 2024–2034 are removed outright. Returning to work into a declining occupation is the worst version of this decision, and the projections are published, so there is no reason to guess.
- What is left is ranked on three published figures: the number of job openings BLS projects each year (40%), how short the entry runway is, taken from the occupation’s O\*NET Job Zone (40%), and projected employment growth (20%). Openings and entry runway carry the weight on purpose. After a gap in a CV, the number of doors and the length of the retraining are the two things that most change the odds; salary is shown on every card so you can weigh it yourself.
- Two filters run before any scoring. The list is limited to the 260 occupations that carry a full BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile and at least 50,000 US workers, so every row is a job that exists in volume and has a full profile page here. Each one must also report a BLS median at or above $50,980, the median for all US occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025). That second rule is an editorial choice, not a data one: a work-environment score on its own fills the top of any list with the lowest-paid work in the economy, which is not an honest answer to anyone asking what to do next.

None of these figures know anything about childcare, school hours, a partner’s schedule or how much of a gap you are explaining. They tell you which occupations can be done from home, hire in volume and do not demand a fresh multi-year qualification. The rest of the decision is yours. ## Careers for stay-at-home parents: FAQ

**What is the best career for a stay-at-home parent going back to work?**

There is no single best one, but on this page’s rule — remote-friendly, not shrinking, hiring in volume and short to enter — the highest-scoring occupation in the bank is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +15.8% projected employment change and 115,200 openings a year over 2024–2034. All 30 careers below show their own pay, growth, openings and entry requirement.

**Do these careers really let you work from home?**

The remote-friendly flag says the tasks of the occupation can be done away from a fixed site, judged on O\*NET ratings for sitting, e-mail, computer use, outdoor exposure, physical proximity and object handling. It does not say that every employer in that occupation offers remote or hybrid work, and it says nothing about hours. Treat it as "this work is remote-capable", then check the individual employer.

**Which of these need the least retraining?**

The entry-runway part of the score comes from the O\*NET Job Zone, which the bank normalises to 1–4. Zones 1 and 2 need little or some preparation, zone 3 medium, zone 4 considerable. Each card also shows the BLS "typical education needed for entry" for that occupation, so you can see whether a degree is the usual route before you commit to anything.

**Are there good careers below the median wage?**

Certainly, and plenty of people take them for the flexibility. This page filters to occupations paying at or above $50,980, the US median for all occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025), because a list of remote work without a pay floor fills up with the lowest-paid work in the economy. The filter is our editorial choice, not a judgement about anyone who takes a lower-paid role.

**How was this list built?**

Every occupation here is flagged remote-friendly by the bank. That flag is derived from O\*NET ratings rather than from job adverts: the work has to score high on time spent sitting, e-mail use and working with computers, and low on outdoor exposure, hands-on object handling, physical proximity to other people and exposure to disease. **What do these careers pay?**

The middle career on this list pays $102,985 a year, against $50,980 for all US occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025). The range runs from $54,210 to $175,140.
