# Career Changes That Work at 40 (2026)

Every career on this list can be entered without years of prior experience in the field, is not projected to shrink, and pays at or above the US median. The highest-scoring one is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +10.2% projected employment change over 2025–2035. Below are 30 occupations with the exact O\*NET and BLS figures behind each one.

**Read this first.** At 40 you typically have twenty-five or more working years left, so a change that needs a year or two of retraining can still pay back many times over. This page ranks occupations on four published figures that decide whether a move is realistic. Your own experience will often shorten the path more than any entry requirement suggests.

## How this list was built

- Only occupations that BLS Employment Projections list as needing no work experience in a related occupation qualify, so every row is a job someone can enter as a newcomer. Occupations projected to shrink are removed.
- What is left is ranked on four figures, 25% each: how short the entry runway is (O\*NET Job Zone, with a degree treated as a real cost rather than a dealbreaker), projected annual openings, projected employment growth, and BLS median pay, each as a percentile within the list.
- Two filters run before any scoring. The list is limited to the roughly 270 flagship occupations that carry a full BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile and at least 50,000 US workers, so every row is a job that exists in volume and has a full profile page here. Each one must also report a BLS median at or above $50,980, the median for all US occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025). That second rule is an editorial choice, not a data one: a work-environment score on its own fills the top of any list with the lowest-paid work in the economy, which is not an honest answer to anyone asking what to do next.

What this cannot see is what you already know. If you are leaving a specific field, the transition pages rank destinations by how much of your existing skill set carries over, which is usually the fastest route at 40. Full method: https://nuecareer.com/careers/methodology

## Career change at 40: FAQ

**What is the best career change at 40?**

On the published data, the highest-scoring option that needs no prior related experience is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +10.2% projected employment change over 2025–2035. 30 careers on this page clear the same bar.

**Is 40 too old to change careers?**

Not on the numbers. With twenty-five or more working years ahead, even a two-year retraining has a long payback window. The barriers people meet at 40 are usually financial (supporting a household while retraining) and practical, which is why this page weights short entry routes and high hiring volume alongside pay.

**How was this list built?**

Only occupations that BLS Employment Projections list as needing no work experience in a related occupation qualify, so every row is a job someone can enter as a newcomer. Occupations projected to shrink are removed. **What do these careers pay?**
