# Career Changes That Work at 30 (2026)

Every career on this list can be entered without prior experience in the field, is not projected to shrink, and pays at or above the US median. The highest-scoring one is Software Developer, at $135,980 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025) with +10.2% projected employment change over 2025–2035. Below are 30 occupations with the exact O\*NET and BLS figures behind each one.

**Read this first.** At 30 you have thirty-five or more working years ahead, so this list barely penalises retraining time: a degree or a multi-year program is a reasonable investment at this age. It ranks on where the work and the pay are heading instead.

## How this list was built

- Only occupations that BLS Employment Projections list as needing no work experience in a related occupation qualify. Occupations projected to shrink are removed.
- What is left is ranked on three figures, each as a percentile within the list: projected employment growth (35%), BLS median pay (35%) and projected annual openings (30%). Unlike our career change at 40 and 50 pages, training time is not scored at all; each row still shows the typical entry education.
- Two filters run before any scoring. The list is limited to the roughly 270 flagship occupations that carry a full BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile and at least 50,000 US workers, so every row is a job that exists in volume and has a full profile page here. Each one must also report a BLS median at or above $50,980, the median for all US occupations (BLS OEWS, May 2025). That second rule is an editorial choice, not a data one: a work-environment score on its own fills the top of any list with the lowest-paid work in the economy, which is not an honest answer to anyone asking what to do next.

Because training time is not penalised, several careers here need a graduate degree. That is a deliberate choice for this age; the career change at 40 page weighs the runway more heavily if you want a shorter route. Full method: https://nuecareer.com/careers/methodology
